Barefoot Bowls – Marong Bowls Club
Barefoot Bowls starts on the 8th September and play begins at around 6.30pm each Friday. It runs through until early March, with a short break for Christmas. Contact the club for further information and/or to register for some evenings of fun.
Registrations can be made by individuals or by a team. Participants generally dress in a casual manner and enjoy the choice of playing in bare feet or wearing flat-soled shoes.
The program is particularly appealing to social and/or family groups who just want to have fun through participating in a cheap evening of lawn bowls. Bowling experience and/or expensive equipment is not required. However, a sense of humour is a distinct advantage!
Through Barefoot Bowls, the club provides some free coaching, the loan of a set of bowls where necessary, bar sales and a barbecue meal. A weekly charge of $2 per person is levied, for which you can enjoy playing bowls with and among friends, and receive a modest reward should you be successful in a match.
Some Tips for Barefoot Bowlers
- The big black shiny ball thingy is called a bowl and not “You useless @#$%” !
- The small white ball is called a jack. It’s not a kitty ‘cos it’s got no fluff on it!
- Stopping your bowl close to the jack is much better for your self esteem.
- Bowls are necessarily bias weighted to make you look foolish at least once each game.
- A bowl has rings on its side to add to your confusion ….. and the club’s coffers.
- Occasionally bowling to the wrong jack is part of the greater bowls journey.
- The ditch at the end of the green is there to keep your bowls out of the car park.
- You bowl from alternate ends to make the walk to the other end all the more worthwhile.
- Bowling from the white mat is well within the rules, whereas taking a run up is not!
You don’t need to be in a team. Just come along and have a go !
