New Bowlers – Marong Bowls Club

Why Play Lawn Bowls ?

The benefits of playing lawn bowls are numerous. Bowlers generally expect to

  • achieve an improved level of fitness,
  • improve their coordination, confidence and self-esteem,
  • meet and play with a diverse group of fun-loving, sports-minded people,
  • form enduring friendships within the wider community, and
  • engage in an affordable and pleasurable pastime.

Lawn bowls caters for all age levels, varying levels of skill and each member’s desired level of involvement. The basics of the game are usually learned in a few practice sessions. However, bowlers often spend years mastering the sport. Sadly, most never do!

Try Before You Decide

Before making a financial commitment to join the club, Marong will provide a beginner bowler with free coaching. A beginner bowler can expect to receive four to six sessions of around an hour’s duration, covering the basic fundamentals of the game. Following these sessions, a prospective bowler should know whether or not to take up bowls as a sport and join the club.

Coaching and Playing

Having joined the club, coaching will continue to be available free of charge. All the new member needs to do is make an appointment with a designated coach.  The coach will know when you are ready to play in an organized game. Most new bowlers need about 3-5 lessons before they are ready to play in a match. Once you start playing organized games, coaching will continue to be available to help develop your skills and tactics.

Club Membership & Affiliation

Upon joining the Marong Bowls Club, a member necessarily becomes affiliated with the local bowls association and Bowls Victoria. This affiliation is recognized by any bowls club within Australia and across the world. A bowler can expect to be welcome at any bowls club and participate in events run at that club.

Bowling for the Disabled

Marong Bowls Club endeavours to provide access to bowls for people of all abilities. Disabled visitors regularly engage in competition at the club and receive the support they require. Ramps are available for accessing the clubhouse and the greens.

Come and Try Days

If you would like to give the game of lawn bowls a try, then you are invited to attend our Come and Try Days, usually programmed for mid to late October and early December. Sessions begin at 1.00pm. If you can’t make it, then we can arrange a coach to provide you and your family or friends with a taste of lawn bowls.

Dress

For practice sessions, flat-soled shoes – runners without a heel are fine – and casual clothing are required. A hat will make you more comfortable as well as provide essential protection from the sun. Having joined the club, a new bowler can expect to outlay a considerable amount for approved items of uniform, a set of bowls and a carry bag. Though the introductory cost of preparing for bowls is quite high, the ongoing costs are relatively modest.
